CITIZENS 2010
Citizen 2010, presents an in-depth look at America yesterday and today through the eyes of the business and political leaders of tomorrow. Watch as they formulate the civic attitudes that will become their core beliefs.

Every year, more than 1200 high school students and their teachers participate in the Center for Civic Education’s prestigious “We the People” national competition. Hosted by the Congress of the United States on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, state representative teams pit their knowledge and skill against each other to be crowned National “We The People” Champions. In this contest, teenagers gain understanding of the institutions of American constitutional democracy, and at the same time, discover the contemporary relevance of the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

The competition format is a simulated Congressional hearing. Each state team, usually made up of 20-30 students, working in cooperative units, prepares and presents testimony, and answers questions posed by a distinguished panel of judges. Competitors demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of Constitutional principles and have opportunities to evaluate, take, and defend positions on relevant historical and contemporary issues.

Young contestants gain confidence and skill and grow into civic-minded citizens, while also examining how cultural, and economic differences impact the competition for some students, and how the competitors take their experience into their personal and professional lives. Through their experiences, viewers reconnect with America’s ideals and idealism.
